The Completely Unofficial Star Wars Encyclopedia Version 7.0 Readme.txt ----------------------------------------- The files in this collection are written to the Microsoft Active ServerPages language. While this allows the use of the Access database for full searching and categorization, it also requires that you have an ASP-capable web server installed in order to view the pages. Currently, there are several ways to get this capability: 1) Install Personal Web Server (PWS): - Windows NT 4.0 - follow the instructions at this Microsoft Support URL: http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4OptPk/default.asp - Windows 95 - follow the instructions at this Microsoft Support URL: http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4OptPk/default.asp - Windows 98 - follow the instructions at this Microsoft Support URL: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306898 - Windows ME - PWS is technically not supported for WinME. However, it will work if you install it from the Win98 CD as above. 2) Install Internet Information Server (IIS): - Windows 2000 - put your install CD in a drive. Go to Control Panel -> Add/remove programs -> Windows components and you'll see an IIS checkbox. Put a checkmark in it an hit OK to install. - Windows XP Home - at this time, your only option is to upgrade Windows XP Professional. - Windows XP Professional - put your install CD in a drive. Go to Control Panel -> Add/remove programs -> Windows components and you'll see an IIS checkbox. Put a checkmark in it an hit OK to install. Once you have the web server installed, you can then download the ASP files and the Access database. Like the rest of the downloads from the encyclopedia site, it has been zipped up using WinZip. You will have to unzip the files into a directory on your local machine that is within the domain of your PWS or IIS installation. Typically, you should have installed the web server into the C:/Inetpub directory. You should see a directory tree that looks like the following: C:/ ... /Inetpub ... /wwwroot You will need to unzip the files into the c:/Inetpub/wwwroot directory. Because the files are dependent upon certain things being in certain locations, you will need to unzip them in such a way as to preserve the directory and path information. How you do this depends on your unzip program. WinZip will do it automatically, because the directory and path information is stored already. However you accomplish this, make sure that the file directory tree has the following appearance: C:/ ... /Inetpub ... /wwwroot ... /swenc70 ... /DB /images Now, assuming that you have your web server installed and configured properly, you should be able to point your browser at your local machine and view the encyclopedia files at home! Just point your browser to the following URL: http://localhost/swenc70/default.asp - or - http:///swenc70/default.asp If you have any trouble, let me know by sending an e-mail to swenc@theforce.net.
