this was the name of a device which allowed life forms to transfer from one ship to another through space, without actually linking the ships together physically. A force field created the tube, sealing up against the hulls of two ships. While not exactly foolproof, force cylinders were considered one of the most reliable intra-ship travel technologies of the New Republic.
