any series of droid that resembles a normal droid on the outside, but has hidden programming that is used to record information and relay it to the droid's owner. MerenData built an espionage droid from a 3PO protocol droid base, which was extremely effective due to the widespread use of 3PO droids as diplomatic interpreters.
