this device was used in starships to record a vessel's systems status, flight path, and other vital data. Their primary use was in reconstructing accidents onboard a ship, to determine the cause of the problem and resolve any issues that might compromise the safety of the ship's passengers. Ancient versions resembled large, transparent disks, although more modern versions resembled small datapads.
