Shadow Child
this was the term used by the Chiss to describe any child whose existence was kept secret by their family. The existence of a shadow child, who was publicly unacknowledged by their parents, served to ensure that a family could not be wiped out by its enemies. It was a common practice among the Chiss to have one or more shadow children, to preserve a family's position within the Chiss Ascendancy.
