according to Han Solo, this was the set of rules by which smugglers worked together, regardless of race, creed, religion, or any other delineating factor. He invoked the Smuggler's Code most often with young, inexperienced smugglers, who were often unaware that there was, in fact, no such thing as a Smuggler's Code.
