this was a common rule of thumb used by starship pilots, when they were faced with having to fly another starship, especially one that has been modified. These modifications usually altered the standard start-up sequences, and most pilots ame to discover that simply pushing the shiniest switch - which was usually the one that was installed last - often got the ship started.
