this was a specialized datapad created by the military forces of the Old Republic, designed to carry all the current signs and countersigns used in combat. The datapad was updated each month, and loaded with the identification codes for every day of the month. All dates were cross-referenced to the date on Coruscant, so that each force with a datapad knew what day's codes to use.
