this was a term used by many of the alien races native to the Unknown Regions to describe the Chiss civilization and its government. The Ascendancy was formed from nine ruling houses, each of which supported the Ascendancy with soldiers and ships for the protection of Chiss space. The Ruling Circle was then formed from the leaders of each house. During the years following the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the galaxy, the Ascendancy's membership was suddenly reduced from nine houses to just four. Aristocra Formbi later explained to Luke Skywalker that the Vagaari Wars resulted in huge numbers of Chiss casualties. Several ruling houses were left so short of manpower that they were forced to turn to the Colony for labor. This arrangement worked well for several years, until Raynar Thul arrived on Yoggoy and created the Unu hive. Before the Chiss could understand what was happening, two entire families had become Joiners, and three other houses had become dependent on insect labor. An internal struggle within the Ascendancy led to the elimination of these five houses.
