this man, the Alliance's Minster of Finance and a Viscount by title, accompanied Leia Organa to Aargau, shortly after the Battle of Hoth. The Alliance hoped to acquire funding for a new squadron of X-Wing starfighters, and believed that Tardi was the only member of the Alliance with the knowledge of banking protocol to successfully complete such a transaction with the Bank of Aargau. They planned to use the Crown Jewels of Alderaan as their collateral, knowing that a loan would be granted almost immediately. Unknown to the rest of the galaxy, however, Tardi had actually died several months earlier. Alliance technicians created an android duplicate, knowing that it could pass through Aargauun customs without a problem. The tricky part would be leaving Aargau, when it was discovered that Tardi was actually a droid. For this reason, Leia schemed to have Darth Vader - who was on Aargau to stop the loan - "kill" Tardi in a fight. Vader, however, had secretly turned the tables on Leia. Viscount Tardi's personal doctor was actually an Imperial spy, and relayed information of his death to Vader. After learning that she planned to use the jewels as collateral, Vader bribed the Aargauun officials into allowing him to acquire them. He then went out of his way to explain this to Leia, after disabling the Tardi droid, so that she could not stop him from taking them without canceling the loan for the X-Wings.
