this swamp-covered world was near enough to its star that it received a large amount of ultra-violet radiation. Despite the fact that no sentient life evolved on the planet, several interesting species - including the croator - developed there. Humans visiting the planet had to wear protective suits in order to protect their skin from radiation burns, and the ultra-violet sunlight created an unnerving set of visual colors to most humanoid species.
