this was the term used to describe any starship propulsion system that allowed the ship to move through realspace. They most often employed fusial thrusters that forced charged ions through an exhaust port. This use of a fusion reaction to generate thrust often resulted in high levels of radioactive emission, which were illegal within a planet's atmosphere.
