an out-dated form of ion drive, the atomic drive was replaced by the Hoersch-Kessel Ion Drive. These drives use a fission reactor to generate electromagnetic waves that reflect off the space-time fabric of realspace, creating momentum. They are extremely radioactive, and must be stored in a pod that is kept away from the living and working areas of the rest of the ship.
