Negate
originally defined by Arvo Norstrag as part of the Rules of the Blade, this was the most serious form of duel recognized by the Phosphura Belt Pirates. In a negate duel, two opposing factions of a pirate company find themselves at odds with each other. Their contention threatens to tear the pirate band apart, thereby threatening the company as a whole. Each faction chooses a champion and up to four aides, with the champion most often being the leader of the faction. No energy weapons were allowed, and the duel ended when one of champions was defeated. This form of duel was most often invoked to choose a new leader when a pirate gang does not have a clear successor. Sometimes, it was fought within a ring of fire, a duel sometimes referred to as the Fire Ring of Fornax.
