the Alliance used this planet's proximity to Fondor as a reason to build a base there, shortly before the Battle of Yavin. It took nearly a year for the Alliance to take the planet from the Empire and establish the base. However, shortly after the completion of the Executor, Darth Vader wiped out the base on the huge ship's maiden voyage. The destruction of the base forced the Alliance to bring the Mon Calamari into the Galactic Civil War, hoping that they could create a diversion while the Alliance evacuated Massassi Base.
