Most often used by tech teams and Imperial technicians, these devices are incredibly helpful when a component is damaged or a subsystem is breached, and the problem might result in a system-wide failure. The techs don't have time to enter in all their security information, and can use the patch to simply correct the problem. The Alliance discovered that these patches could also be used to mask an intrusion into an Imperial computer system, allowing the saboteurs to place a virus or tag without being detected.
