Hasbro's The Clone Wars 2011 Wave 3 Review

Hasbro's The Clone Wars 2011 Wave 3 Review

Posted By Curto on June 30, 2011

It's time once again to review another wave of Hasbro's The Clone Wars action figures!

The third wave for 2011 includes 2 Jedi in new outfits and 2 new clones...all brought to life in the animated style!

A Word About Wave Numbers
It is somewhat confusing, keeping track of this line, especially when Hasbro continues to restart the numbering each year. We have been getting a new packaging look each year, but that did not happen in 2011. Some folks think of each year's packaging design as representative of each season of the show...but really this is just a coincidence.

While this is the third wave of figures for 2011, it's the 10th wave for the "Blue Skies" packaging, and to make it even more confusing, it's the 26th wave in the TCW line overall, if you think count the repack waves that continue to ship. Yes, it's all very confusing...especially if you're trying to maintain an ongoing archive where the rules keep changing!

Galactic Battle Game
This year's pack-in gimmick continues in this wave with Battle Card, Battle Stands, and Battle Dice.

Now, onto the figures themselves!

CW49: Clone Trooper (Riot Control):

Another wave, another clone. This figure is pretty much just like any other super-articulated clone trooper figure since 2008, and it's got great articulation for a variety of poses. The head is the same that was used for Captain Lock, and overall this clone has a fresh coat of paint with Coruscant markings.

The real excitement with this figure is the accessories. While he comes with the standard DC-15 blaster rifle, he also has a cool riot shield and stun baton. Perfect for deflecting blaster fire and beating the bad guys into submission! The baton can also be stored inside the shield, which is a nifty feature.

CW50: Barriss Offee:

There's actually 2 Barriss Offee figure hitting this year, and pretty much at the same time, which is interesting. This one is, of course, based on the style from the animated TV series, and therefore it follows the anatomy style that is used on the show. That's actually the good news here.

The bad news is that while this figure has a good likeness to it and the paint deco is well-done, it's lacking in the articulation department. You can understand why...the proportions are smaller than over in the realistic line, and it's no doubt a real challenge to add them and keep the aesthetic. But...we've seen in other female figures that super-articulation IS possible, so it's very much missed here. Still, it's not like this figure really needs it, since she wears a huge soft goods skirt that hides it all anyway. Oh, and what a skirt it is! The material that is used has a nice shine to it, making the figure really unique.

Barriss Offee includes her lightsaber (ignited, one-piece) and 3 "brain worms" that were seen in the show. Nothing special about those really, but they do look neat.

CW51: Eeth Koth:
Eeth Koth
Eeth Koth Eeth Koth
Eeth Koth is the latest Jedi Master to be added to the line. In the films, Koth was replaced by Agen Kolar, due to a different actor playing the part. Then again, Koth was also said to have been killed, but obviously he's still kicking in The Clone Wars!

Whatever the case really is...this figure is a good representation of him. It's not a great figure, since we once again see a step backwards in terms of articulation. Unlike the other Jedi in this wave, Koth has articulated knees. He also has a soft goods skirt which is a little on the poofy side, but it works pretty well for this character.

The deco is pretty basic, but that's just a result of the character's look. Eeth Koth also includes an ignited lightsber.

CW52: Clone Commander Colt:

Now this figure is interesting. As seen in the series 3 season premiere, the ARC Troopers have made their appearance on Kamino. While that storyline was all-new, there was a nod to Dark Horse Comics' Star Wars: Republic #50, where 3 ARC Troopers defend the city. Only in the TV show, they all have unique color schemes, including this one, previously known as "Red Leader".

There was a Battle Pack created that brought several of these ARC Troopers out, but the deco on those figures was based on the original concept art for the episode, planned long before it actually aired. In the interim, the color scheme of this clone changed...but it was too late to alter the figure's release. To correct this, Hasbro took the first available opportunity and slotted in a show-accurate deco for Colt, and the results are stunning. The "skull mask" on the helmet is well-done, and the rest of the colors are nice and tight.

Colt comes with 2 blasters that came be stored in the attached holsters, as well as a missile launcher. The shoulder armor is removable, and the rangefinder can rotate.

Stay tuned for more updates as each figure is added to The Clone Wars Photo Archive!
