FOX Studios in Sydney is about to get bigger with the NSW government granting approval for an expansion of the filmmaking complex.

The move, which follows the recent closure of the site's failed Backlot entertainment complex, is tipped to make the film studio even more attractive to overseas producers.

NSW Treasurer Michael Egan said the film studio, located in Sydney's Moore Park, would be given an extra 2.1 hectares under the agreement signed today.

Lack of studio space had been the "biggest brake" on filmmaking in NSW, he said.

"At any one time, there is $10 billion of US film production looking for locations around the world," he said.
