Slowly but surely, theaters are aiming to install digital projection units in time for AOTC. 2 theaters in Florida are the recipients this time around. From St. Petersburg Times:
The Tampa Bay area's moviegoing experience is preparing to take a digital leap into the future. R/C Theaters Parkside 16 in Parkside Mall in Pinellas Park is installing two digital projection systems, in time for the May 16 debut of Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones, created by George Lucas with this technological breakthrough in mind.
Parkside 16 purchased its systems from Technicolor Digital Cinema, one of several competitors in the rapidly growing digital technology market. R/C Theaters vice president David Phillips couldn't confirm the equipment's price but said company executives instructed him to insure the systems for more than $320,000. "Our No. 1 concern is presentation for the audience," Phillips said. "Our (ticket) pricing will be the same for those auditoriums as any other movies."
Parkside 16 becomes the first local theater to adopt the format and the second in Florida, after AMC Pleasure Island 20 at Disney World. That megaplex has one auditorium rigged for digital projection.
Judging from digital cinema demonstrations at the ShoWest theater owners convention in March, moviegoers will see and hear Lucas' movie -- and all others transferred from film to digital disc -- with more clarity than before. A 12-minute montage of scenes from Attack of the Clones was screened at ShoWest, and it dazzled the audience with richer colors and sharper images.
