Christensen also, of course, knew all about Anakin's fall from grace.
"I'd like to think of myself as a good guy," Christensen says of his personal character. "But in playing characters which have darker sensibilities, you go within yourself and try to discover what you have within yourself. Part of playing Anakin was trying to figure out my own demons."
Anakin, of course, is tempted by his burning love for Padme Amidala. Jedi are supposed to be above mere carnal urges.
"That's sort of Anakin's downfall," Christensen says, "that he feels a lot, that he is a very passionate person."
In that, Christensen can relate, in his own smouldering way. Not that he will allow himself to really watch himself in the role during today's Toronto screening.
"No, I can't," he says of watching without terror, a common dilemma for actors. "You wish that you'll be the exception. But I do think, saying that, that Star Wars is the one film that you lose sense of, 'Maybe I made the wrong choice here,' or, 'Why did I do that there?' -- because of everything that is added. The presentation of it is so extravagant that you're kind of consumed by that and you lose sight of the fact that you're in the film."
