Two of the biggest contenders for summer box office champ go head to head in May. From showbizdata.com:
Box office analysts are predicting that Friday's release of Sony's Spider-Man could see ticket sales of $75 million before the weekend is over. However, the movie faces stiff -- some would say overwhelming -- competition from Fox's Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones just two weeks later. Sony, which reportedly spent $130 million on Spider-Man, is also gambling big on several other potential blockbusters this summer, hoping at last to become a top competitor, the New York Daily News observed today (Wednesday). Studio executives "better turn it around. They have $1 billion on the line. ... That's the biggest gamble anyone here can remember," Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart told the newspaper. Goldman Sachs media analyst Rich Greenfield indicated that he was impressed. "It's one of the most exciting slate of movies I've seen in years," he said.
This is going to be a great summer for movies. Hopefully, Episode II will reign once again atop the summer blockbusters and prove the Force is still with Star Wars.
