'Plunger-Head Guy' In New 'Making Of Episode 2' Video Posted By Chris on June 6, 2001
We're receiving several e-mails about the latest "Making Episode 2" video on the Official Site, including some speculation about this guy, Star Wars's newest hero: Plunger-Head Guy!
So why the "head on a pike" look (seen in full in this screneshot)? Joseph Al-Khazraji suggests something:
The Plunger is likely a marker for ILM to use for an alien...likely a TALL alien...sound familiar???
Indeed it does, Joseph! We're almost 100% positive that this is SPOILER (highlight to read) Anthony Phelan, the actor portraying Kaminoan prime minister Lama Su (see Episode II Characters for photo). Phelan is wearing the "plunger" as a reference for the ILM artists to put the CGI-rendered Lama Su in later, so they can figure his height, shadow, etc. properly in relation to Obi-Wan and his surroundings, sort of like the "Jar Jar Cap" that Ahmed Best wore during Episode I filming. Just think: that blue background behind Ewan and Phelan could very well be that massive clone hatchery/classroom we've heard stories about! Very cool :-)
Update - Ian Foster has this to add:
This shot appears to show the real time 3d tracking system in operation. You'll notice all the cursors on the screen ? they're tracking specific points on the bluescreen and the set, almost instantaneously they can composite a 3d model in to that scene to see how it works with the footage just shot. It's pretty cool hearing about this technology one day and then seeing it in action the next.
