Empire Online just opened their new Star Wars Episode 2 section. It looks like every day they'll be presenting a new interview. The first is with Frank Oz:
Empire Strikes Back was a tough shoot for you. Is that correct?
It was a very tough shoot. It was very hard because animatronics had been done before that. Jim and I had obviously done The Dark Crystal, so there was a lot of animatronics, but this was much more an acting situation and it was a little bit more based in real feelings. But it was really just very difficult to make it so precise because you're dealing with me and three other people working one character, so it was very very difficult. It was very tough but very rewarding too.
Were there problems from the fact that George was a very hands-on producer?
I didn't notice that. Kersh [Empire director Irvin Kershner] really deserves a tremendous amount of credit. He put a tremendous amount of work into that film, and I don't think he gets enough credit. When I was on set, George was talking with Kersh, but I never got the feeling that George was in control. Kersh was in control. As far as I was concerned, he was the director. George was the creator and the producer but Kersh was very much in control and I didn't say anything to cause any problems.
