Australian Fan Reactions to AOTC - Pt 3 of 3

Posted By Britany on May 15, 2002

Here's the FINAL part of our Australian fan reactions to AOTC (spoilers whited out).

Adam tells us:

It just finished 20 minutes ago. Only the greatest star wars film yet.

Richard tells us:

Just got back from Readings Cinemas in Geelong, Victoria. The cinema didn't do anything to speak of. But then again, neither did the audience. It was a rather strange atmosphere as there was barely a noise when the movie started. The only costume I saw was - and get this - some guy fully dressed in "Star Trek" gear! - very brave - but very funny too.

The audience were virtually silent for almost all the entire movie - things did come to life a little when (highlight to read) Yoda proved his reputation as a master of the lightsaber. Overall a very quiet and strange evening but at the same time, an immensely enjoyable viewing.

Julian tells us:

We just finished watching the movie and it was great. As expected, people turned out in huge numbers to attend the event film of the year. They opened the doors 45 mins before the film started, and everyone scrambled for the best seats. There were a few that were dressed up in star wars garb - a darth vader, a 6 foot yoda (?) and a couple of jedis. A news crew was there and a couple of people staged a light sabre battle (complete with toy lightsabres).

People were restless, and there was quite a lot of noise, but everything quietened down once the lights dimmed. At the end there was a big round of applause. Since the audience consisted of die hard fans, they were always going to love it. My opinion (hightlight to read)

  • It was strange listening to star wars with a couple of aussie and kiwi accents thrown in
  • Yoda stole the show
  • Jedi conversation is boring and stale
  • The FX were amazing - but at times overwhelming (too much to take in)
  • C3PO bombed (there was absolutely no need for him)
  • The scene where Anakin finds his mother is a tear jerker - the highlight of the movie
  • thank god for the limited Jar Jar screen time
  • Lucas still strays into immaturity at times - at times it spoils the scene
  • Ewan McGregor is great - He brings a lot of credibility to the whole thing
Lucas could have made some more cuts and the movie would have been better for it. Like the first movie, a majority of scenes were dominated by special effects, and as a result the actors had very little to work with. There needs to be more situations where they have freedom to speak their mind, and not just use conversation as a vehicle for the plot (eg. (highlight to read) there needs to be more scenes like where obi wan, anakin and amidala are tied to the pillars).

Aron tells us:

Well we just got back from the midnight screening at the Rivoli Cinema in Camberwell, Victoria. The session was sold out. Myself and a few friends went in costume, though there weren't many who did. As everyone will soon know this movie is great. The last half of the movie... Oh My Goodness! Just stunning. Will be back again tomorrow just to try to take it all in. From talk after the movie everyone was very happy with the latest chapter of the Star Wars saga.

Jasmine tells us:

I went to the midnight screeening In Brisbane at the Myer Centre. IT was great! There was a good atmosphere in the crowds and a few people dressed up. I only went half way and wore a SW T-shirt. The movie itself was Awsome!!!!! George is definitely back! Worth waiting 3 years for! (highlight to read) Yoda totally ROCKED!!! and Mace WIndu was really cool too! Man I'm tired, but I am so glad I went! MTFBWY!

Jedi Daniel tells us:

Just arrived back from the midnight premiere screening of Star Wars Episode 2. There were over 100 people at our local cinema (Bunbury) and the line was out the door. Many people arrived 6 hours in advanced to get first seats and many had Star Wars books to read. A few people dressed up as Jedi and one women came as Queen Amidala in her red gown. As soon as the movie started there was a loud cheer as the scroll went up. Towards the end of the movie another cheer was heard when (highlight to read) Yoda was fighting and many fans were pleased by the film and I heard many comments saying "Far better than Episode 1".

Anonymous tells us:

In Sydney at the Hayden Orphuem, they still have an old Organ playing before each movies showing. At Midnight last night the organ player belted out the Star wars themed while dressed in a Darth Vader outfit. It really got the crowd pumped up. Then of course we saw the movie and all I can say is George, you're back in the saddle!!!!

Smoking Frog tells us:

I attended the midnight screening at the Indooroopilly Megaplex in Brisbane. I went in costume, as a Sith Lord (I decided to create my own character rather than try to live up to an established "look"), and two of my friends went as Luke (ANH) and a crimson Royal Guard. I must say, that while I was expecting the weird looks we got on the way up to the cinema, I wasn't expecting the round of applause we got from the other fans who were already lined up, when we got there!

We didn't take any cameras into the cinema, because we knew security would be looking out for cameras. We had our photos taken by a local university student magazine though, and a couple of girls came up and asked to have their photos taken with us. Everywhere we went we turned heads, and I must say, we did have some of the best costumes there. It's a pity there weren't more in costume. A great night, and the movie rocked!! If only I didn't have to go to work today, so very tired.....

Joel tells us:

I must say the (highlight to read) final individual battle was the best so far in the SW saga. While I won't say who was involved I will say Lucas has out done himself. The (highlight to read) shadow silhouette entering into the arena followed the test of skills and then the unbelievable fight scene left the audience in awe.

Madonna tells us:

I went to the 6:30 pm screening and let me tell you the atmosphere was electric. (No pun intended). They started the DVD The Phantom Menace on the Trailer screen in the lobby 2 hours before the premiere, to keep the fans calm and happy. I didn't take my camera (bummer), but the dudes From the local Star Wars store, "FAN ATTIC" all came dressed as Kit Fisto, Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Aura sing, Sarth, Death Star Commander, (Who stood up before the opening and said, NO TALKING DURING THE MOVIE with Darth Vader stanng beside him). The most impressive were Jango and Boba Fett who got the crowd going, yelling at the top of their lungs as the entered the cinema. I got to review it on Radio this morning. It was Excellent, 10 out of ten.

And FINALLY Leroy tells us:

Our local cinema had a Variety Childrens Charities, screening @ 6:45 wednesday and raised $5000 for local charities. the cinema was Marion Megaplex in South Australia. I have to say world wide release has brought us all together like never before.

Well said. Thanks to all the Australian fans who wrote in. Unfortunately, we won't be able to post anymore Aussie reactions, but we'd love to see pictures (no more than 3 images).
