There is very little official word on this character. Lucasfilm registered the domain name www.watto.com and www.watto.net. The name "Watto" was also registered by Lucasfilm in the US Trademark Database. He was featured briefly in the first trailer.
From the toy back:
"The owner of slaves Anakin and Shmi Skywalker, and a notorious gambler, Watto is a Toydarian junk dealer who supplies the denizens of Mos Espa with all manner of mechanical odds and ends."
Delta Source: Watto owns a junk shop in the Tatooine city of Mos Espa. There is one scene where R2 rolls into his shop.

Watto is one of those characters in the prequels that we have heard next to nothing about. About all we've heard so far is that he/she/it had a Junkyard. Well, we asked our informants to dig up some more information on Watto and they came through. Turns out that Watto is a caterpillar-like creature with wings. He, for lack of a better word, 'flits' around. Our informant wasn't clear on Watto's size, but I gather it isn't tiny and it isn't large. I'm assuming he's mostly CG. We'll also find out that Watto isn't one of the nicest critters on Tatooine. Watto is a fairly significant character in the prequels. His role, as you'll find out, is rather important. Remember how we knew that there were some slave quarters in Mos Espa? It turns out that Watto is a slave owner. Care to guess who two of his slaves are? Both Anakin Skywalker and Shmi Skywalker are Watto's slaves. Ponder that for a while and a lot of the puzzle pieces start coming together, eh?
2/25/98WATTO'S PRIVATE BOX
Our Bothan Spy sent us a new picture of Watto's private box in the Tatooine arena (more revealing than the picture of it on the official site). Aparently, the image of a face on the "monitor" is actually just a hologram. Click here for a larger version. |
