Hasbro's The Clone Wars 2011 Wave 5 Review
Posted By Curto on October 9, 2011
It's time once again to review another wave of Hasbro's The Clone Wars action figures!
The 5th wave for 2011 includes 2 clones, 2 Jedi, and a bounty hunter ...all brought to life in the animated style!
A Word About Wave Numbers It is somewhat confusing, keeping track of this line, especially when Hasbro continues to restart the numbering each year. We have been getting a new packaging look each year, but that did not happen in 2011. Some folks think of each year's packaging design as representative of each season of the show...but really this is just a coincidence.
While this is the 5th wave of figures for 2011, it's the 12th wave for the "Blue Skies" packaging, and to make it even more confusing, it's the 28th wave in the TCW line overall, if you think count the repack waves that continue to ship. Yes, it's all very confusing...especially if you're trying to maintain an ongoing archive where the rules keep changing!
Galactic Battle Game The GBG accessories (Battle Card, Battle Stands, and Battle Dice) are still included, although the emphasis on the packaging has been downplayed a bit.
Clone Wars Adventures As seen in previous waves, there is a huge sticker that wraps around the front and side of the bubble, offering a free 30 day membership & 450 station cash for the online game. There is a special coupon included with a code that grants access to this.
What's also of interest is a new sticker (the stickers and inserts take up at least half the front of the bubble!) that tells you to "See this gear online" at clonewarsadventures.com, but only until 3/1/12. I'm not entirely sure what this means, but if I had to guess, I'd say the extra accessories make an appearance in the game somehow, which is a great cross-promotion because the "bonus gear" for the most part does not appear in the TV show. Kids will enjoy this, no doubt. Not sure about the "only until 3/1/12" part though...
Anyway, onto the figures themselves!
CW54: Saesee Tiin (Jedi Flight Gear):
| Another Jedi Master joins the ranks! One of the original onscreen members of the Jedi High Council, Saesee Tiin has seen quite a few action figures over the years, but this marks the first version from the TV show. And the figure itself looks like he stepped right off the screen with a dead-on sculpt and a nice deco.
The "bonus gear" for this figure is a rather large "Jedi Flight Gear" backpacks with fold-out wings reminiscent of Saesee Tiin's Jedi Starfighter. A special harness fits over the shoulders, providing a sturdy support for the heavy wings. In a nice nod to the original Clone Wars microseries, the helmet is very similar to the one he wore in that show.
As stated in other reviews, this figure lacks ankle articulation...which is missed for sure. But here it's not really needed...and I daresay that the figure would most likely fall over if the ankles bent too much.

CW57: Stealth Ops Clone Trooper:
| Here's another clone kit-bash, now with a huge backpack! Not only does it first missiles at separatist droids, but there is also a breathing mask that the helmet fits into.
In addition, the harness includes a holster to store an extra blaster pistol, arming this trooper with a lot of firepower for outer space battles. Since the head is the same as Clone Commander Jet, the communications headgear is removable, although there is no extra set with the antenna raised.
The body is the second version of the clone trooper, with less articulation than the original. |
CW60: Kit Fisto (Cold Weather Gear):
| Here is the companion to Plo Koon from the previous wave, and in fact this figure "shares parts" from Plo Koon. Since both characters appeared in the same comic book, The Clone Wars #7, that makes sense. Rumor has it this was in fact planned for the Comic Packs line, before that was cancelled.
As before, the sculpting is more realistic than other figures in the animated style, suggesting perhaps a blending of the two lines into one? Whatever the case may be, we've got a great new figure for battles in colder climates.
The snap-on "bonus gear" includes snowshoes and also a special visor to protect Kit Fisto's eyes. |
CW61: Seripas:
| One of the bounty hunters seen in season 2, Seripas is a massive bulking character that is actually a suit of armor "driven" by a tiny alien inside.
This impressive figure is all around smooth on the outside, but there's plenty of great hidden details on the inside. First, there's hidden blaster in the right forearm, which can be extended by pushing down on the top of the arm. Second, there's a spinning blade in the left forearm, which can not onlt be extended down, but also rotated forward for slicing enemies.
Best of all, the "head" flips up and reveals a secret cockpit inside, where Seripas is revealed to be a tony alien inside a massive battlesuit. The figure is removable, so you can admire the detailed cockpit, complee with padded seats and elaborate controls.
Finally, Seripas includes "bonus gear" by way of a sniper rifle. |
CW62: Captain Rex (Rocket Propulsion Pack):
| The final figure in this wave is a major upgrade to Captain Rex, the most prominent clone in the series. While previous versions have been variations of the original figure, this takes it one step above that. There's different articulation than before (although still no ankles), and Rex is wearing a soft goods kama. Which is good because he now has ball-hinged hips, allowing for more movement and poses.
The "bonus gear" for Rex is an arsenal of weapons and accessories! Not only does Rex come with his standard helmet, pauldron, and twin blasters...but he also comes with a huge propulsion pack with oversized harness! The harness include a third holster, allowing for more firepower.
Speaking of firepower, this Rex has it all...the top guns rotate top to forward, taking aim at droids. A nice design surprise is that a smaller rocket pack is hidden inside the larger pack, and can also be work separately. It's not yet known when/if this will appear in the TV show, but it's a nice added feature for this figure! |
Stay tuned for more updates as each figure is added to The Clone Wars Photo Archive!
