A series of posters featuring characters from The Phantom Menace were put up all over Europe and Asia. They featured Anakin, Qui-Gon Jinn, Jar Jar, Mace Windu, Darth Maul, the Queen, Watto, and a Battledroid. This series was commonly referred to as the "One" posters because of the common theme running through them. The posters were mainly large sized used in bus shelters and subways. Since they were not available to the public, they are more difficult to come by.

Harry Chen sent us the following report in 1999:

The "One" Darth Maul poster (from Singapore) you just posted is one of several in a series, one for each character, including Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Amidala, Watto, Mace Windu. I have not seen them all. Billboard versions were seen in Singapore's MRT subway on the days leading to its opening on early June. I flew there to see TPM; couldn't wait.

The posters also have been translated into Chinese (literal translations, making the phrases "feel" awkward), and are used in Hong Kong's subway stations (opening on July 1) and on Taiwanese bus billboards (already showing). The Hong Kong ones differ from the Taiwanese ones in that the name of the movie is translated slightly differently. The English version posters have been copied, i.e., bootleg, and can be bought for eight dollars each from street markets. I believe there are five different ones. I don't buy bootlegs so I'm not sure.

Harry followed up by sending us scans of 6 of the 9 Hong Kong posters from newsprint and an update on the bootlegs:

Unfortunately, they are in black and white, scanned from newsprint, and I'm missing three: Anakin, Qui-Gon and Watto. I doubt the one for Watto was ever translated though, because I haven't seen that one anywhere, and only the ones for Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Darth Maul and Anakin have been enlarged to poster size for use in subway stations.

Bootleg "One" posters in English are available in Hong Kong, each going for about eight dollars, in good colors but bad quality paper stock. The characters in the posters are: Amidala, Anakin, Battle Droid, Darth Maul, Jar Jar, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Watto. I wonder why no R2-D2, Shmi or Yoda.

The translations of the Chinese phrases in the Chinese posters in Hong Kong are:

Queen Amidala - "One time true love, One life of searching"
Battle Droid - "One dedicated mission, One fighting spirit"
Darth Maul - "One truth, One anger"
Jar Jar Binks - "One favorite son, One best buddy"
Obi-Wan Kenobi - "One choice, One Force"
Mace Windu - "One doubt, One dream".

Alberto from Mexico City sent us the following in 1999:

Also we have (or had) all those posters like the Darth Maul from Singapore, I saw them last week on a lot of bus stops, there are:

Qui Gon - One Master - One Rebel (In spanish - Un maestro - un rebelde)
Anakin - One hero - One destiny (In spanish - Un heroe - un destino)
Darth Maul - One truth - One hate (Una verdad - Un odio)
Jar Jar - One friend - One clown (Un amigo - un payaso)

However, they didn't last for a week, this monday I wanted to check them out again and found that they had been stolen, almost all of them.

Stealing of the "One" posters was a common occurrence as Stephane Leonardi from France saw reported in the AP:

Here is the translation of the article Hundreds of posters from the movie " TPM " stolen in France. The story takes place in Marseille on the French Riviera where a thirty-something man was judged today before a French jurisdiction about stealing in a few days about 100 posters of the movie TPM displayed in bus shelters. The damage made to those shelters was evaluated at about 200,000 FF (about $30,000) Police officers found that this man was about to resell those stolen posters to fans willing to pay up to 500F each (around $100) Amazing isn't it ?
