THE MUSIC OF THE PREQUELS

His thematic motifs are as significant to the story development of our favorite movies as the script and actors, lifting them into the range of mythic opera.  There are obviously going to be quite a few characters, locations, and scenes that will require his musical embellishment, and I think it would be fun to speculate on what kinds of new themes we will hear, and which themes from the existing trilogy will be recapitulated in the earlier forms of the characters we already know.  Here are some of the themes I've been wondering about:

OBI-WAN'S/THE FORCE THEME: This is an interesting question to ponder: Obi-Wan's theme in the existing trilogy is used also as a general theme for "The Force".  Will Obi-Wan have this same theme in the Prequels or will a younger Obi-Wan have his own theme, while the Force theme is used for the Jedi of the Old Republic?  I personally would prefer the latter option, that the Force theme be used to accompany the heroic Jedi of the days of old, the noble servants of the Force.  This way, the scenes in which this theme is used in the existing trilogy will gain even more significance as a nostalgic reference to the nobility of the "old days":  Luke watching the twin sunset on Tatooine, the medal ceremony, Yoda's eloquent (if gramatically questionable) speeches about the Force, and the funeral pyre of Anakin Skywalker.  Also, a younger Obi-Wan would perhaps be better suited by a wilder, more youthful theme -- one that suggests his recklessness and the dangers that can come with it.  This, too, would add meaning to the use of the Force theme to refer to Obi-Wan in eps 4-6:  finally, he is "one of the Jedi" and not just the careless one who screwed up.  Star Wars is all about redemption; George Lucas has said as much, so wouldn't this make sense?

THE STAR WARS "MAIN THEME":  Another theme that was used for dual purposes in eps 4-6: the Main Theme was also used as Luke's theme!  Since eps 1-3 aren't about Luke at all, can Luke's theme still be used as the main theme? Well, there really isn't any question as to whether the Prequels will begin with the Main Theme we know and  love; who could imagine them any other way? I've got an interesting idea about this theme, though:  what if Williams uses this not only as Luke's theme, but as *Anakin's* theme, too?  At least for Episode 1, that is; I would imagine that the theme/themes for Anakin would become progressively "darker" over the course of the three Prequels, eventually descending into Vader's theme.  But, if Anakin's theme and Luke's theme were one and the same, I think this would lend some very interesting significance to the mytharc of the redemption of the father through the son--musically!

OTHER EXISTING THEMES:  We're going to see many other characters from eps 4-6 in their earlier forms, too.  Jabba the Hutt, Yoda, Palpatine, perhaps Grand Moff Tarkin (though he has no musical theme) or Mon Mothma, the 'Droids, and many others.  Are we going to "hear" them as well?   It would make sense to have Jabba and Yoda keep their same themes, and Williams has several different mini-themes for the droids that he could presumably choose from to portray them musically in the prequels, but Palpatine poses an interesting problem:  his theme in ROTJ is pure evil.   A seemingly unobtrusive senator of the Old Republic with a musical leitmotif that menacing would seem a bit odd, if we don't know yet what he's up to.  If, however, his plotting and his clandestine Dark Side sorcery are shown in ep. 1, then perhaps this theme would still belong?

NEW THEMES:  We can only guess as to what kind of themes will show up for new characters and situations in the Prequels:  a theme of nobility and romance for young Padme, something mysterious yet "venerable" for Liam Neeson's "gray" Jedi (I don't buy yet that he's definitely named Qui-Gon Jinn), "Enemy" themes for the Sith, the "Gungans", and whatever, and of course, lots of new battle/action music.  There's a lot more to think about, but I've said enough already, and the final answer will only come when we can hear Mr. Williams' score in THX stereo in May 1999!  What do you think?"

As for the new music, I heard on other sites and among the various rumours that one of the great new themes for Episode 1 will be the Jedi Knight theme.    Now I know we had "the force" theme in the original trilogy, but this is different.  The Jedi were extinct by then.  Apparently George Lucas wants something as memorable as "The Indiana Jones Theme" or "The Imperial March".  It will have to be memorable, yet capture the honour and nobility of the Jedi.

I would also expect a theme for the young Queen, similar to Leia's theme but different.

Anakin would have to have a theme, but you could be right.......John Williams may even use the main title (Luke's theme), to describe Anakin while he is a good guy.  Then again it would also seem appropriate to invent new music for this important character.  He can still have a strong, noble, good guy theme and it can be different from the main title.  I tend to think Anakin will have his own theme, which will progressively become darker (perhaps by flatting certain notes - changing the key etc) as he falls to the dark side.

This new theme of Anakin's may even be used as the main title for Episodes 1, 2 and 3.  Remember, the main title that we all know and love is actually Luke's theme.  Don't fear though.........I am positive that ANY new theme used to open the movie would be fantastic.  There are endless possibilities of musical tunes and and I know that if new music is used to open a Star Wars movie it would just as, if not more memorable.

All in all........most of the music will be new.  This is a good thing. Despite how great the old music was..............I know we all want more, new music.  Anything John Williams does is so good, I know that the music will be fantastic."

1) Padme's Theme.  I'm pretty sure this character is important enough to warrent a theme.

2) This "POD" race will definately have one.

3) Coruscant

4) Jedi Council:  Possible the same "Force" theme.

5) Darth Maul:  I'm sure Williams will come up with a good one here.

6) Naboo:  This may be one and same as Padme's theme but I sure it will be there.

7)  The music that ended ROJ:SE may be redone and used.  This piece seemed to be possibility for Anakin's theme.

The last thing I'd like to add is my thoughts on the "Main" theme.  Personally, I'd like to hear a different theme.  The problem with old one is that it is too inter-twined with that section of music called the "Rebel Fanfare", which is inappropriate for the prequels since there are no "Rebels".  I would like to see Anakin's theme here.  Something new that is not as "heroic" as Luke's theme.  I would like to see GL and JW go out on a limb and do something different.  Do I think they will change the opening theme?  No but I can wish can't I?"

After that, I would like to see new themes for most of the other characters.  I'm a huge fan of the Imperial March and Palpitine's somewhat satanic ROTJ theme, so I would like to see those reappear at some point. (toward the end of the 3rd trilogy?)  Obi-wan will have to have a new theme, along with many of the other new characters.  Yoda's theme is a toss-up, although a newer "more youthful/active" theme would fit well.

I hope John Williams is doing the score for the next trilogy, but are we sure?  Has anyone found any info. confirming this speculation?

Christopher McElroy wrote: "One theme you might also wanna think about was the FIRST Imperial theme, used only in ANH. Williams used it as a dark dirge as Ben spun his tall tale about Anakin's death, and later used it loud and brassy everytime the stormtroopers showed their plastic heads. This could recur in Episode II and III as the Empire emerges from the ashes of the Republic."

"myself i believe that george lucas will use the lukes theme as the opening title music , without it it just wouldn't be star wars would it?
as for wether john williams will be doing the music of episode one (and
2 and 3) according to the official star wars magazine in the UK
the answer is YES, in an interview with lucas it states that he will be
doing the score ,so if that isn't proof I dont know what is?"

"This is my first time e-mailing your site, and I'd like to throw my hat
into the ring in regards to the music of the new trilogy.  I think we have
already heard an important new theme in the prequels, and it came to us in
the special edition of ROTJ.  I am, of course, thinking of the Victory
Celebration theme played under the new celebration footage and the ewok
celebration...I think it is Anakin's theme.  It is a beautiful, lyric,
child's theme, one that will allow for growth in it's character, a
darkening into Darth Vader's theme (which in turn becomes a lullaby at the
time of his death) only to reawaken and blossom again at the end.

Lucas is a structure-freak (not that it's a bad thing), and musically it
reinforces Star Wars as being Anakin's story, following his rise, fall, and
redemption by his son, Luke.  Listen to it again, and dream of May, 1999."

"Like the story and the characters reflecting 4-6, the music will reflect
the later development. There will be a love theme for Anakin and Padme,
that might become more mature / mournful, similar to the 'Luke and Leia'
theme. Anakin's theme will undoubtedly begin very much like Luke's, but
must descend to Vader's by the end of the trilogy. Obi-Wan is
"reckless", so his theme must reflect this before it matures later. Will
the 'droids have yet another theme ? !! what would be really great,
would be for Williams to be able to hint at the existing themes in the
new ones, to present their evolution."

"I think that it would be great if the Force theme that plays during
the binary sunset and vader's cremation were introduced to the prequels
at a few key points during the end of Episode 3.  I think this haunting
theme would be great for preparing us for the leap in time between the
trilogies.  This theme is used most heavily during the beginning of ANH,
so I think it would make sense if it was also used heavily at the end of
Episode 3, in order to carry the story and the themes from one Trilogy
to another."

"Well it's been a question raised for several months now, what's the
theme song for the Prequels going to sound like?  We've heard
speculation on anything from the classic SW theme to possibly something
new.  Well I have what is not only a theory, but a very sound one.  It
goes like this:

In ANH we are introduced to Obi-Wan's theme, aka "the Force theme."  We
know it's Ben's theme because it starts up when he saves Luke from the
Tusken Raiders, and it recurs whenever Obi-Wan is being heroic or Luke
hears his voice.  It is as much the theme song for Ben as it is the
Force, and it's absolutely beautiful.  Well, the music from the ending
ceremony, the music when the medals of valor are being awarded -- that's
a beefed-up version of Obi-Wan's theme.  Why use that for the ending
sequence?  Well that in a way is obvious -- I mean Obi-Wan has passed on
to Luke the knowledge of the Force and Luke has essentially taken his
place as the last of the old Jedi, and is also the first of the new,
hence he has his own theme song, the theme for the entire trilogy
(episodes IV through VI).  He is the "New Hope" of which the title
speaks.

It seems like that ending music would make a good theme song for the
Prequels, now doesn't it?  Since the Prequels would be about Obi-Wan and
Anakin, and Ben's failure and the final hiding of the twins and his own
retirement to the Jundland Wastes, well...it seems to fit very well.
Almost too well, in fact.  If Episodes I - III have his song for a
theme, and then Luke's theme song takes over in Episode IV, the use of
Ben's theme in the ending as a kind of kiss-off or passing of the torch
is strengthened significantly.

It's only fan speculation, but as you guys at TF.N have pointed out many
times, it's fun to speculate now and then.  And besides, it sounds
rather probable, doesn't it?  In the end it's up to John Williams and
George Lucas, but I know whatever they deliver will be spectacular."
