STAR WARS
Battle of Hoth: Index: Luke's Crash

shot preview description
D001

Two AT-AT walkers advance on a SW heading, firing at rebel defenders. Some of the western hills are visible in the background.

D002

Rebel troops in a trench appear to be facing westwards. They must be close to the portside of the walkers.

D003

Rebel troops with portable tripod guns. They appear to be facing west or northwest.

D004

AT-AT walker, moving SW, is attacked from the front by a snowspeeder. The 'speeder appears to be shooting at two dark vents on the upper hull, showing that Luke's two-cable attack is not the rebels' only innovation in this battle. Northwestern mountains dominate the background.

D005

A part of the rebel trench system that has already been badly hit by Imperial fire. A dish turret lies wrecked to one side. The rising smoke and its shadow indicates that the camera faces east, and the prevailing wind presently blows from the east. Rebel soldiers run from east to west, moving to a trench that is closer to camera. The walkers may be approaching this point of the trench system.

D006

Rebel trenches apparently at the eastern end of the defences, near part of the high mountain range that runs to the south of the battle (probably the range containing the base). These rebel guns point westerly, as the AT-ATs advance south-westerly along the eastern fringe of the western hills. One turret beside this trench has been completely destroyed.

D007

Dish artillery near another trench of uncertain position. The pass between the Base Range and western hills seems to be visible in the middle of the far background.

D008

Another dish gun near yet another different trench. The pass between the hills and the mountains does not appear open in this view. The hills on the horizon look like the outer corner of the pass, but seen from a more north-westerly position, so that in projection the pass seems closed.

D009

AT-AT walker, presently heading south or southwest, exchanges fire with rebels including one of the artillery dishes. Knobly northwestern hills are visible in the background.

D010

Rebel turret, facing northwards, is hit by AT-AT fire and explodes.

D011

Explosions around the dish gun, in a previously seen trench position where the southwest pass is visible. The generator is not visible from this position; it is probably too far away, downhill beyond the pass.

D012

Explosions around rebel trench; unknown position and orientation.

D013

Exploding dish artillery.

D014

Explosions at the eastern end of the rebel trench system, where rebel guns face somewhat westerly towards the advancing and passing AT-ATs. The background mountain range contains the rebel base. A snowspeeder passes overhead, moving westwards towards the Imperials.

D015

AT-ST outruns an AT-AT walker. The camera is facing west or northwest. The background shows the hills and mountains to the west of the open ice plain.

D016

General Veers gives debarkation orders to an armoured stormtrooper officer. The officer's insignia are equivalent to a naval lieutenant, which is equivalent to an army captain.

D017

The generator is now within sight of General Veers' walker, on the horizon at the southwest extreme of the Base Range. The walker commences firing on the generator, but obviously none of these initial blasts is sufficient to destroy the generator completely. The generator is a massive and durable piece of machinery, and it will take a while for Blizzard 1 to finish it off. The southern extremity of the low western hills is now hard to distinguish, off the right side of the picture or lost in the saturated glare of foreground snow.

D018

Rogue Leader and Rogue Two converge into a pair formation.

D019

Rogue Leader cockpit. Luke glances left at Rogue Two. The lighting is difficult to read, but it may be shining from the camera direction, which would mean that the speeders are flying northwards.

D020

Rogue Two cockpit. Zev's face is bleeding. Sunlight falls from the starboard side, indicating that he may be flying generally northwards. Another 'speeder crosses his path at right angles, possibly heading west. Is this Hobbie's speeder joining Luke and Zev?

D021

Rogue Leader cockpit. Luke still appears to be flying parallel to Zev.

D022

Two AT-AT walkers in the western foothills fire upon snowspeeders attacking from their front. The walker's shots dissipate in bright flashes: either a decay interaction in the ambient shield covering the battlefield, or absorbing in particles of snow which instantly vaporise. The sun is high. Clouds off the centre cast a faint shadow on the foothills to the left.

D023

Cockpit of Rogue Two, piloted by Zev.

D024

Cockpit of Rogue Leader, tactically swerving from side to side (perhaps to evade fire from AT-ATs). It appears to be headed easterly in these particular stills.

D025

Two AT-AT walkers (standing amongst western foothills) as seen from Luke's snowspeeder cockpit. The walkers fire at the snowspeeders.

D026

Zev is bleeding. His speeder must have received a violent buffeting. The shadows make it appear that he's flying northeast.

D027

In Rogue Two cockpit. Zev's gunner has a sooty helmet: evidence that he has experienced long service like Luke and Wedge. Who is he? The rear crest and sides of the helmet don't show any prominent coloured marks. Compare with the men present at Princess Leia's briefing.

D028

Rogue Two (Zev) and Rogue Leader (Luke) fly towards two AT-AT walkers that are marching through snowy foothills. The direction of motion is difficult to tell because the shadows are indistinct. It's possible that the hill on the right is casting a diffuse shadow on the left hill, in which case we're looking northwards and the walkers are still moving generally southwards.

D029

Rogue Leader cockpit. The sunlight coming from portside indicates that Luke is flying generally southwards.

D030

Zev's cockpit interior. The snowspeeder explodes.

D031

Explosion of Zev's snowspeeder. The sunlight appears to come from portside. If this is still morning then Zev is diving towards the south.

D032

Rogue Leader cockpit interior. Luke appears to be flying almost into the sunlight now: approximately east and then turning southeast.

D033

Two AT-AT walkers amidst western foothills, as seen from Rogue Leader cockpit. The light direction is difficult to read. If the walkers kept a nearly constant course then the speeders would be flying northeast now.

D034

Rogue Leader and another snowspeeder (Hobbie?) fly towards two AT-ATs. The sun is on Luke's starboard side, implying that he's flying approximately northwards. Luke speaks to Hobbie.

D035

Rogue Leader dives towards the ground in front of an AT-AT walker. The walker is among snowy foothills, apparently heading south.

D036

Luke's snowspeeder cockpit during his crash. In the background beyond the ice plain we see the western hills.

D037

Exterior view of Rogue Leader snowspeeder smoking and crashing in front of an AT-AT walker. Judging by their shadows, the walkers are heading SW.

D038

View from the cockpit of Rogue Leader as the snowspeeder crashes at the feet of an AT-AT walker. The walker is still headed SW, and Luke is heading towards the NE.

D039

Rogue Leader, crashed in the ice. Luke attempts to push open the cockpit canopy. The shadows aren't clear enough to tells us the direction, but it is safe to assume that the 'speeder crashed facing northeast: its last trajectory in the air.

D040

Luke opens his 'speeder's cockpit. The western hills are visible in the background. An intact snowspeeder flies west nearby. Is this Hobbie?

D041

Closeup of Luke struggling inside his cockpit.

D042

Feet of the approaching AT-AT and a snowy hill nearby.

D043

Luke notes the approaching walker, but turns back into the cockpit.

D044

Luke rummages in the snowspeeder cockpit as the AT-AT draws near.

D045

Closeup: Luke and Dack's body.

D046

Closeup: feet of the approaching walker. There seems to be more light on the portside than the starboard side, consistent with the AT-AT continuing to move SW or S.

D047

Luke prepares to abandon the snowspeeder.

D048

AT-AT foot lands near the crashed 'speeder.

D049

Luke tries to finish his work in the cockpit. Another snowspeeder flies past in the background. Is Hobbie or Wedge trying unsuccessfully to distract the walker and buy Luke more time?

D050

AT-AT footpad looms over the crashed 'speeder.

D051

Luke leaps away....

D052

.... and lands in the snow.
