STAR WARS
Battle of Hoth: Index: Harpoon Tactics

shot preview description
C001

Rogue Three and Rogue Leader in flight. The direction of the sunlight is difficult to read in this shot. The oncoming walker fire implies that they are in front of the Imperial units (i.e. southwest of the walkers).

C002

Rogue Leader cockpit. Hills visible to the port side may be the knobbly hills to the west of the open ice plain.

C003

Cockpit of Rogue Three, piloted by Wedge Antilles. The lighting indicates that the 'speeder started this shot flying northeast but turned southeast.

C004

View from a snowspeeder cockpit, probably either Rogue Three or Rogue Leader. Rebel soldiers run through battle debris. The light comes from the right side; the soldiers are heading northwest: perhaps advancing to reinforce rebel positions further west and closer to the Imperials' line of approach. The snowspeeder is flying northeast. Smoke blows WNW, indicating the direction of the prevailing winds on the plain, during this stage of the battle. The wind direction may change later, by the time of the rebels' general retreat.

C005

Rogue Leader cockpit. Luke orders Wedge to set his harpoons and follow on another pass of a walker. Judging by cockpit shadows, the speeders turn right from an easterly heading to a southerly heading.

C006

Rogue Leader and Rogue Three fly a turn, heading back towards the AT-AT walkers.

C007

View from Rogue Three cockpit, as it makes a head-to-head approach on a group of at least 3 AT-ATs. Rogue Leader is visible slightly ahead and to the right. This side of the cockpit seems well lit. The speeders may be flying generally northwards, but the evidence is indecisive.

C008

Rogue Three cockpit, Janson the gunner prepares to fire his harpoon.

C009

Janson's gunnery seat in Rogue Three. The sunlight suggests that the speeders may be flying south.

C010

Cockpit of Rogue Leader. The direction of sunlight is difficult to tell. The illuminated side of a walker leg is passed on the port side, implying that Luke may be flying north at this moment.

C011

Snowspeeder passes between the legs of the target AT-AT from the northwest side.

C012

Cockpit of Rogue Three: Wedge orders Janson to fire his harpoon.

C013

Janson, gunner of Rogue Three, activates a harpoon.

C014

The magnetic harpoon attaches to an ankle joint of the AT-AT.

C015

Cockpit of Rogue Three, seen while the 'speeder encircles an AT-AT. Flashes of blaster fire occur nearby.

C016

Rogue Three flies in circles around the AT-AT it has attacked. The shadows show that during this moment the walker is headed approximately SW.

C017

Wedge Antilles' snowspeeder gunner, Janson, attends to the condition of the harpoon's tow cable.

C018

AT-AT walker in the process of rebel entanglement. The walker is facing approximately WSW.

C019

Inside the cockpit of Rogue Three. Western peaks are visible inthe background.

C020

Rogue Three encircles the legs of an AT-AT walker. Hills and mountains are visible in the background to the northwest. The walker is headed approximately SW.

C021

View of Rogue Three, through the legs of its AT-AT victim. The camera appears to be facing westwards or northwestwards.

C022

Rogue Three cockpit: Wedge Antilles.

C023

Rogue Three circles repeatedly around its AT-AT target. Here it appears to be at the front of the walker. Northern and western mountains are visible in the far background.

C024

Rogue Three cockpit: Janson.

C025

Rogue Three cockpit: Wedge Antilles. The AT-AT is visible in the right background. the snowspeeder is flying away to the southwest of the walker, which is facing WSW.

C026

The end of the tow cable detaches from the rear of snowspeeder Rogue Three.

C027

With the cable detached, Rogue Three flies up and away to the west of its target AT-AT.

C028

Rogue Three flies from the scene of the toppling walker.

C029

Entangled legs of the walker. The cable shows at least five turns. The snowspeeder Rogue three must have made at least this number of circles around the walker. The stumbling walker faces WSW or SW.

C030

The walker falls, as seen from the eastern side. Western knobbly hills are visible in the background.

C031

AT-AT walker lands violently, facing SW. Rough mountains are visible off to the northwest.

C032

Major Derlin and troops in a rebel trench. Derlin orders a charge against a fallen AT-AT walker.

C033

Rebel troops run across snow near hills, snowspeeder flies overhead. The direction of the light is unreadable. One trooper carries an unusual backpack. Is this specialised equipment for demolitions or something else?

C034

Wedge's fallen AT-AT walker. Its shadow points forward and starboard, thus the walker faces southwest. Rough mountains and hills are visible off to the northwest. Snowspeeders shoot at parts of the walker's broken neck, then it explodes.

C035

Cockpit of Wedge's snowspeeder. The sun is to his portside, implying that he has turned and is flying south at this moment.

C036

Cockpit of Rogue Leader. The sun to Luke's portside implies that he is flying south at this moment.

C037

Rebel command centre. An order is given that two transports should be launched at the same time. The vibrations felt in the command centre, showing that this part of the mountain is being affected by deeply penetrating blaster beams from the battle.

C038

In the hangar within the north entrance, Han Solo and Chewbacca making hasty repairs on top of the Millennium Falcon. At least one squad of rebel troopers runs past the bow of the ship.

Note the absence of snowspeeders and X-wing fighters. The snowspeeders are engaged or destroyed in the battle. Most of the fighters have shifted to the south entrance where they launch in pairs escorting transport ships.

C039

At least one X-wing fighter is still in a hangar. This is Luke Skywalker's Red 5, and R2-D2 is being loaded into the astromech socket. Perhaps this is one of the last fighters to be shifted out to the south entrance?
