Suvudu Posts Q&A With A New Dawn Author John Jackson Miller

Suvudu has a Q&A with John Jackson Miller, the author of Star Wars: A New Dawn, in which Miller responds to questions that the Star Wars Books Facebook page solicited at the beginning of October. Here's a taste of the Q&A:

Benjamin Hart Since Gorse/Cynda is a new system, how much info about them did you have ahead of time to go by, and how much freedom did you have to develop those planets?

John Jackson Miller: I had full freedom to develop the system, and I spent quite a lot of time developing it beforehand. I thought a lot about the geology of both worlds and their orbital dynamics; I studied literature on the gravitational dynamics between moons and their parent planets. Star Wars is space opera and not hard science fiction, but I try to keep things plausible. I even called up the friend I used to publish a SF fanzine with in high school to bounce around some of the what-ifs that later come up in Lieutenant Deltic’s scenes; that was a fun discussion.

Then for the worlds themselves, I had a good idea of their geography (or internal geography, in Cynda’s case). Cynda was a sort of place I had wanted to write about for a long time, someplace resembling the Cueva de los Cristales in Mexico; Gorse, meanwhile, was fun in its perpetual darkness. That’s one of the little jokes of the book, that “dawn” on Gorse is impossible and would be deadly to boot.
