UPDATED: Disney Responds! Disney Infinity 3.0 Allegedly Includes Star Wars; Disney Has Report Pulled

Posted by Erik on May 1, 2015 at 11:50 AM CST

According to a report from Dis Kingdom, which has since been pulled at the request of Disney Interactive, a German website had offered the starter set for Disney Infinity 3.0, complete with figures for the Clone Wars versions of Anakin and Ahsoka.

The following picture is being circulated around Twitter. We have no confirmation yet whether the image is accurate.

We've contacted Disney Interactive and are awaiting response for confirmation or for information on when an official Disney Infinity 3.0 announcement might come.

About Disney Infinity...

For those who don't know, Disney Infinity is a console game in which players can adventure through quests or explore player-created content in a "sandbox" mode called the Toybox.

Much like its competitors (specifically Skylanders and Nintendo Amiibo), Infinity allows players to place a physical figurine on a plastic platform (a "portal," connected to the game console via USB). The player then assumes the form and abilities of that character in the game. When a player swaps the figurine for a different one, the in-game character is replaced with the character from the new figurine. In addition to identifying the figurine to the game system, the NFC chips in the base of the figurines allow data to be saved. Thus, a character's level and configuration of abilities can be saved back to the figurine, allowing this data to be read on a console at a friend's house, for example.

Personal Thoughts...

As someone with a young son just discovering video games, I own much of the existing run of Infinity content. Version 1.0 contained characters from Disney movies and television series. Version 2.0 introduced Marvel characters, as well as new game features. The game quality (especially in 2.0) is great for kids, and it's pretty good for casual adult players as well. The figures are well-sculpted with iconic poses and costumes, and they're physically rugged enough that my son's figures have held up despite constant physical bashing by the Hulk.

Ever since version 2.0 was confirmed to contain Marvel characters, it's been widely believed that version 3.0 would focus on Star Wars. We've been expecting this news to break eventually. The biggest questions have been about which characters would be included and which "worlds" (game environments) would be available. Based on the box image, assuming it's accurate, we can safely assume that the characters, vehicles and scenes on the box will appear in the game. Specifically, these include Anakin Skywalker (Clone Wars era), Ahsoka Tanno (Clone Wars era), Obi-Wan Kenobi (prequel era), Yoda, Darth Vader, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Princess Leia (donning her A New Hope garb). Vehicles & mounts include the Naboo starfighter, pod racers, and a tauntaun. Locations seem to include Hoth and Tatooine.

This seems a satisfactory sampling of Star Wars content so far. We're obviously anticipating information about character packs and worlds, but for now, this appears to be a very solid starter set.

We'll keep you posted with more information as we get it.

UPDATE:

My contact at Disney Interactive referred me to the following tweet:

This translates as "Patience you must have." They seem to be saying a lot with those four words, but I'll leave the interpretation up to the reader. Rest assured, your patience will be rewarded with more specifics as soon as we get them.
