Colombian Buzz Surrounding Episode III Posted By Britany on May 18, 2005

1) On May 18 EVERY theater in the city showed 'Revenge of the Sith' making exclusive premieres at 12:00 hours at noon. This meant you could actually go to the theater, buy the ticket and see the movie, because for this "flash" premiere there were no reservations available or possibility to make any reservation. This deal made by 20th Century Fox Colombia.
2) Tuesday 17th, El Tiempo (the most important newspaper in the country) dedicated a big section to Revenge of the Sith. The online version has in the same way, a big special section dedicated to the movie. Usually a section of this kind always refers to an important political or sport event. By the way, I'm featured in the site with my humble Star Wars collection in the section that says "Im?genes de fan?ticos colombianos" (Colombian Fans images). I?m the first one (Nicol?s). The site contains comments, articles and reviews.
3) A lot of magazines have dedicated their covers or inner pages to Revenge of the Sith. The cover of Carrusel, a weekly magazine who has NEVER featured before a movie in its cover. They always have featured models, family pictures, actors or actresses... this is a very curious thing.
4) Two of the biggest shopping marts in Colombia (something like the WalMart or K-Mart stores in the U.S.), almacenes Ley and almacenes EXITO have made a deal with the franchise named "La Galaxia de las Marcas", something that could be translated as "Brand Wars". This contest is very simple: if you buy a certain amount of money in products who have a special star wars sticker, you can play in a roulette or a bull's eye game to win Star wars t-shirts and posters.
5) The billboards here are quite different than those in the rest on the world. Here, in Colombia, some billboards like the ones featuring Yoda and the duel of Anakin vs. Obi Wan have neon lights attached to them in the area of the lightsabers, so in the night you can actually see them glow !!! That's awesome. There are giant billboards in some shopping malls in the main cities.
6) Movistar, the biggest cellphone company in latin america, signed a merchandising agreement with Lucasfilm, so you can download ringtones, pictures, etc, from the Movistar Colombia website. However, the website is not yet "fully operational".
