Report From SW Night With The Bowie Baysox 2012

Posted By Mike on July 2, 2012

In our second trip to Star Wars Night with the Bowie Baysox (6-23-12), my son Landon and I were treated to more of the GFFA fun we've now come to expect from the themed evening of baseball. Admittedly, we didn't stay for the full festivities this year. Due to a previous rain out, this Star Wars Night was a double-header. My son's only 6 and getting him through one full baseball game can be considered a win. That being said, we had an awesome time and we can't wait to bring my younger son as well when he's 4 next year.

It seems as if this Star Wars Night is now a well oiled machine as things truly were almost identical to last year. Why mess with a winning formula? Prior to the game, the concourse was filled with costumed members of the 501st and Rebel Legion. There were display tables, a silent charity auction, and a few roving R2 units. Camera phones were out everywhere and kids all jockeyed to get their pictures taken with their favorite characters. Some of the kids were in costume, some wore Star Wars shirts and others were brandishing lightsabers. Smiles were everywhere and, as per usual, the 501st and Rebel Legion were fantastic with all of the various picture requests.

Star Wars trivia, movie clips, and a couple wacky contests (such as a Chewie roar contest) were sprinkled between innings throughout the game. Of course, so were lightsaber battles...

Again, we headed out after the first game so we missed the large lightsaber battle finale (which I'm sure looked fantastic in the dark) as well as the big fireworks display. Hopefully we'll get to stay for the full evening next year, but Landon and I left early with no regrets. We took a bunch of fun pictures, played some kiddie games, ate our respective weights in junk food, and even watched an inning or two of baseball.

Thanks again to Matt Wilson and the Bowie Baysox organization for providing a fantastic time for me, my son, and everyone else in attendance. Thanks as well to the many volunteers, whether they be in costume or simply helping out, for aiding to create another memorable evening for baseball and Star Wars fans alike.
