SW Weekend #4 Report

Posted By Britany on May 26, 2001

Evan sends in the following report. The documentary he is describing is the Making Episode II Video - Part 2. Those of you who haven't seen it yet are given another reason to download it. You can see video captures by clicking here and read our analysis by clicking here.

The Spoiler warnings are there to protect those avoiding spoilers. If you want to read them, highlight the entire passage.

I was just at Disneyworld this weekend. Part of the Star Wars hoopla was an exclusive behind the scenes look at Star Wars Episode II! Not many people showed up to watch this 'Behind The Force' preview in the animation studio on a BIG screen, but that's their loss.

The first 10 minutes was the same footage as on the new Trilogy release, but there was another never before seen 15 minutes or so after that. It was incredible! My stuffed Ewok was soaked with drool after seeing this footage! Here's an outline of what I saw:

  • Unedited footage of Obi Wan (Spoiler) in his Jedi Starfighter (he was (Spoiler) wearing a really funny looking dome-shaped helmet).
  • Stunt co-ordinator Nick Gillard accidentally revealed (Spoiler) the name of Obi Wan's Fighter's R2 unit :a red droid named R4. Following his slip up, George told him to watch what he said about (Spoiler) R4 and pretended to beat him up!
  • Sam Jackson playing with his lightsaber.
  • Anakin running through a crowded Coruscant 'street(?)' (this looked the same scene as what the first EPII select showed).
  • A high shot of the Coruscant nightclub with (Spoiler) all kinds of crazy critters roaming around.
  • Natalie Portman getting her makeup touched up on her ship.
  • C3PO (Spoiler) pushing a button of some kind on Padme's ship.
  • Doug Chiang sketching the Jedi Starfighter and then a scale model of the ship.
  • -Chiang also said (Spoiler) we will see an entire STARFLEET of Jedi fighters!!
  • George said the (Spoiler) wedge-shaped Jedi starfighters are modelled after star destroyers so we will see how everything starts to turn to the dark side.
  • Here's something weird, in EPII, (Spoiler) Obi Wan has the same exact style lightsaber, despite losing it in his duel with Maul.
  • Natalie and Hayden talking about there not being a single scene without any bluescreen.
  • Chancellor Palpatine with (Spoiler) Mas Amedda and an as-of-yet unknown twilek bureaucrat on the Chancellor's mushroom shaped podium (as seen in an early spy pic several months ago).
  • A couple of strange looking (Spoiler) rock formations with somebody wearing a Jedi tunic (Obi Wan?) in front of a bluscreen (presumed to be Geonosis).
  • And several other quick glimpses of various scenes that were hard to make out.
Overall, this was a very nice treat for hungry fans! If any of you are going to be anywhere in Florida tomorrow, I STRONGLY suggest you check this out! I hope you've enjoyed my little review and hope to see some of you Sunday for the very last showing of this wizard footage! May the Force be with you.

Thanks Evan!
